  5. This document provides late-breaking information and help 
  6. on how to install and play the Microsoft Golf Trial Version. 
  7. This Trial Version gives you a feel for the game play of 
  8. the full retail version of Microsoft Golf 3.0. 
  9.  
  10. The Trial Version includes:
  11. * Three holes of play at Banff Springs
  12. * The ability to create and edit players
  13. * A multitude of club and shot type selections
  14. * Shot-by-shot commentary
  15. * Several different views including Top View and Green View 
  16. * Play against another computer opponent
  17. * Online Help to give you game tips and answer questions 
  18.  
  19. The full retail version of Golf 3.0 includes all these 
  20. features plus much more.

  22. NOTE  Since the Golf Trial Version represents only a portion 
  23. of whatÆs available in the full game, you will see some 
  24. features described in online Help that are not available in 
  25. the Trial Version.

  58. To play  the Golf Trial Version, you need:
  59.  
  60. * A 486/66 computer (Pentium 90 computer or better recommended)
  61. * Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or later operating 
  62.   system (will not run on earlier versions of Windows)
  63. * 8 MB of memory (RAM) (16 MB recommended)
  64. * 20 MB of available hard disk space 
  65. * A sound board plus speakers or headphones to hear audio
  66. * A Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
  67. * 256-color Super VGA monitor
  68.  
  69. NOTE  If you need to upgrade to Microsoft Windows 95 or 
  70. Windows NT 3.51, see your local retailer.

  72. Improving Performance on Machines with 8 MB of RAM
  73. ==================================================
  74. If performance is slow on your computer with 8 MB of RAM, the 
  75. following tips may help:
  76.  
  77. * Close some of the Golf windows (for example, if both Main 
  78.   View and Green View are displayed, then close Green View).
  79. * Modify options in the Preferences, Display dialog box, 
  80. such as:
  81.   1. Choose No for Draw Shadows.
  82.   2. Choose No for Texture Terrain.
  83.   3. Set Terrain Detail to minimum levels.
  84.  
  85. When you turn off Texture Terrain and reduce the Terrain Detail 
  86. levels, you affect the appearance of the course. Do this only 
  87. if speed is more important than appearance.

  93. Installing the Golf Trial Version
  94. =====================================
  95. The Golf Trial Version is a self-installing 
  96. file that automatically installs the Trial Version 
  97. to the C:\Glf_Demo directory.

  99. Starting the Golf Trial Version

  101. To start the Golf Trial Version:
  102.      1. Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar.
  103.      2. Point to Programs.
  104.      3. Point to Microsoft Games. 
  105.      4. Click Golf 3.0 Demo.
  106.  
  107. Troubleshooting the Golf Trial Version Setup
  108. =====================================
  109. Below are the three most common errors encountered with
  110. the Golf Trial Version installation. Follow the instructions 
  111. for each error message you encountered while trying to install, 
  112. and then run Setup again.
  113.  
  114. **An Intel 486 or higher processor**
  115.  
  116. You must either upgrade to an Intel 486 or higher processor or 
  117. switch to a computer with an Intel 486 or higher processor.
  118.  
  119. **Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or later**
  120.  
  121. You must install Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or 
  122. later. To purchase a Windows upgrade, see your local retailer.
  123.  
  124. **A 256-color video driver (minimum 640 x 480 display 
  125. resolution)**
  126.  
  127. Microsoft Golf high-resolution golf courses require at least 
  128. a 256-color video display. In most cases you need only install 
  129. a 256-color video driver to get this display.
  130.  
  131. You must have Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or later to install the 
  132. Trial Version. If you are using Windows NT 3.5, contact your 
  133. retailer for an upgrade. For more information about video 
  134. issues, see the section later in this document, Video 
  135. Troubleshooting.

  138. C.  Audio Troubleshooting
  139. =========================================================
  140. If the Golf Trial Version does not play sound properly, first 
  141. verify that: 
  142. * You've correctly installed the Windows 95 or Windows NT sound 
  143.   drivers.
  144. * Your speakers are on and turned up.
  145. * The Windows 95 volume control is enabled and turned up and 
  146.  the Mute check box isn't selected. 
  147.  
  148. If the game still doesn't play sound properly, verify that 
  149. Windows 95 can play .WAV files:
  150.      1. Quit Golf as well as any other programs that use sound.
  151.      2. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, point 
  152.     to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  153.      3. Double-click the Sounds icon.
  154.      4. Under Events, click an event that has a loudspeaker 
  155.     icon next to it.
  156.      5. In the Name text box, be sure that the three-letter 
  157.     file extension is .WAV.
  158.      6. Under Preview, click the play button. You should hear a 
  159.     sound.
  160.  
  161. If you don't hear any sound, or if Windows 95 is not able to 
  162. play a .WAV file, check to see that a sound driver is enabled:
  163.      1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, point 
  164.     to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  165.      2. Double-click the System icon.
  166.      3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  167.      4. Click the plus sign next to Sound, Video and Game 
  168.     Controllers. If you donÆt see this entry, or you have 
  169.     no sound card listed under this entry,     contact the 
  170.     manufacturer of the computer or sound card and request 
  171.     help for reinstalling the sound card drivers.
  172.  
  173. Some 8-bit sound cards may have difficulty playing the advanced 
  174. sound effects packaged in Golf. To eliminate periodic or random 
  175. freezes, try turning off the game's Background, Commentary, or 
  176. All Other Sounds options in the Preferences dialog box. To turn 
  177. these off, click the Options menu, choose Preferences, and 
  178. select the Sound button; or, on the Welcome screen, click the 
  179. More button, click Preferences, and then click the Sound button.

  182. D.  Video Troubleshooting
  183. =========================================================

  185. Displaying 256 Colors
  186. =========================================================
  187. Your computer must display at least 256 colors to run the Golf 
  188. Trial Version.
  189.  
  190. If you don't have the necessary 256-color driver, or if you 
  191. aren't sure that your video card supports 256 colors, contact 
  192. your video-card manufacturer.
  193.  
  194. To display 256 colors in Windows 95:
  195.      1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, point 
  196.     to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  197.      2. Double-click the Display icon.
  198.      3. Click the Settings tab.
  199.      4. Under Color Palette, click 256 Color.
  200.      5. Click OK.
  201.  
  202. To obtain Super VGA drivers: 
  203. Download the SVGA drivers from the Microsoft Download Service 
  204. (MSDL). These drivers work correctly on many video cards. The 
  205. phone number for MSDL is (206) 936-6735. This service is 
  206. available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The highest download 
  207. speed available is 14,400 bits per second (bps). Each file 
  208. is a compressed, self-extracting file. To obtain the file, 
  209. download the file name SVGA.EXE. After you download the file, 
  210. run it in an empty directory to extract the files it contains.

  212. Resolving Other Video Driver Conflicts
  213. =======================================
  214. General Video Driver Notes
  215.  
  216. If you install different video drivers after installing the 
  217. Golf Trial Version, this may change the performance of the game.
  218.  
  219. If you experience distorted colors, ghosting, or other 
  220. irregular video problems, you should consult the DISPLAY.TXT 
  221. or README.TXT packaged with Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51/4.0 
  222. for hardware-specific display problems. Most video problems can 
  223. be resolved by updating the operating system's display drivers. 
  224. Consult your OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) for a 
  225. possible display-driver upgrade.
  226.  
  227. Some systems may have display problems when using incorrect or 
  228. generic Windows video drivers. Be sure you have installed the 
  229. correct video driver for your video card.
  230.  
  231. To determine which driver is being used, do the following:
  232.  
  233. For Windows NT 3.51, double-click Windows Setup 
  234. in the Main group. 
  235.  
  236. For Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0:
  237.      1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then 
  238.     click Control Panel.
  239.      2. Double-click the Display icon.
  240.      3. Click the Settings tab.
  241.      4. Click Display Type, or for Windows 95 click Change 
  242.     Display Type, and note the Adapter Type displayed.
  243.  
  244. Contact your video-card manufacturer for verification of the 
  245. latest video driver and for information about obtaining the 
  246. latest driver.
